Let the Speculation Begin- New Ride at X-SOB Area

Recommended Posts

I would laugh and laugh and laugh if it turned out to just be a Wild Mouse. Its about the right sized space for one.

Mr. DumaKey1212, my knowledge of footers isn't extensive either, but it just doesn't seem big enough for a large coaster.

And Mr. Roberts, I agree, it does seem about the right size for something like a Wild Mouse, and that used to be one of my favorites in the old days. I would find it quite funny as well. It could even turn out to be a flat ride, though I haven't a clue what. Guess we all will be surprised at some point.

It will probably be mid-late summer that we get an announcement this year Mr. Duma, it will be more like the D-Back announcement way back when. Also look at the facebook posts about the wanting more of Diamondback, what are your thoughts on those posts? Clues or just nothing to think about?

Considering I want it to be a giga coaster badly, I'll take it as a hint in that direction, but they could just be messing with fans to throw them in the wrong direction.

So, to you, the posts are just diversions?

They could just be diversions, like I Am Rider was saying earlier about the signs on the Diamondback construction fence that had song lyrics like "Ride Sally Ride," which turned out to have nothing to do with the final theme.

A few things to look at when trying to figure out what this could be is layout, the size of the footers, and what Cedar Fair has been trending with rides the last few years. Too be honest I hope they do not get a Winged Coaster. GateKeeper at CP is cool and all, but to have another one just 3 hours apart doesn't make sense. You have to make a ride that is different and will draw guests to that park. I have a feeling it will be a giga coaster by B&M, like Leviathan. Yeah KI has Diamondback but they need a ride to break the barrier like what Son of Beast did, because no one else had it. And B&M would have their first giga coaster in the USA. But if you look closely at the footers they look like Intamin footers since the supports are skinnier. That is my input, I am assuming we will see an announcement sometime in August.

It looks similar to the train storage area at the station from when Diamondback was at this stage of construction. My bet is on a BM giga.

Gentlemen, to me, the footers just don't look to cover enough ground, at least at this point, to be a giga coaster. Just my viewpoint; I've been wrong many times and have a hard time seeing the "big picture" when it comes to construction for sure. But the footprint just doesn't seem that large. And they are very good at diversions, as mentioned previously. Let's hope, whatever it turns out to be, that it is completely new and different from anything else they've done.

I know this sounds crazy, but it makes for good marketing purposes. But I had a thought that maybe this ride will be a spin off of The Beast in some way. A steel version of The Beast? I honestly could see them naming the ride after it, also because it sits on the SOB land as well. The teaser signs look just like the ones SOB used when they were promoting that ride in 1999. It sounds like the name of this ride is going to be some kind of monster from what the teaser sign says. SOB was my favorite ride at KI and I would really like to see them continue some kind of trend with The Beast name.

If this ride does end up being a Winged Coaster, I am going to be a little upset.

A steel version of The Beast would pretty much have to be a giga in my eyes, and Cedar Fair is due to build another unless Leviathan was the only one.

Oh yeah it would be a giga for sure. I have a feeling Cedar Fair is trying to make Kings Island a lot like Canada's Wonderland. Behemoth and Leviathan, Diamondback and ???? I can see it happening. It sounds like you agree with me about a steel version of The Beast? (JTW). Most of the people on other sites are opposed to this idea, well I say if you are a true Kings Island fan that you should appreciate an idea like this. The one thing I like about roller coasters is the marketing ideas that they create leading up to the announcement. A marketing idea like this would generate a lot of hype and money revenue for the park. SOB did in 1999 and its first year in 2000, minus the delay and issues.

I don't particularly want that ride but it just seems to fit the pattern.

Whatever we're given I will gladly ride, I would just prefer something other than a bigger Diamondback.

I think Kings Island needs a giga coaster or a terra coaster. Anything like Millennium Force or Maverick is the best investment they can make for KI. If you haven't been on GateKeeper yet at Cedar Point then I think you will change you're mind about something other than a bigger Diamondback. It will either be that or a winged coaster, and after riding GateKeeper I was not that impressed. Yes it was awesome the first time but after going on that ride more and more I got bored, it was not as thrilling as it was hyped to be.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert at this stuff, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about. :bangin:

I've heard all sorts of different ideas about what we could get. Some people have dropped different hints (although I'm not sure how they would know). People have used the word "launch", but mostly they've latched onto the word "dive" as a possible clue, and other people have even mentioned the word "diversion"...as in diversion. Bear with me, because this is just my mind running off on a tangent...but I was thinking that it might not actually be a dive coaster, and it might not be a giga, either. However, could the coaster itself have a version of a "dive"? A dive is basically a steep drop from a higher elevation to a lower one, whether it's into water or not. Some people think it could be an Intamin coaster (based on the rectangular footings shown in some photos of the construction site) and if you think about it, MF "dives" down to the ground from the lift hill - TTD "dives" to the ground from the top hat - Maverick "dives" to the ground after the first launch.

So I let my mind wander a bit. Someone over at KICentral posted a video to the song "Sugar, Sugar", which made me think about whether there is a candy-themed coaster - or park. Hershey Park popped into my mind, and I looked at their list of coasters. Storm Runner and Fahrenheit are both Intamin coasters, and their first drop is a "dive". They aren't dive coasters, but both have initial drops which could be seen as "dives". I started thinking about how we never got a replacement for King Cobra, which was a snake-themed coaster. Diamondback is a snake-themed name/coaster, but it has no inversions. As I was reading about Storm Runner, I saw that it has a cobra loop, as well as a snake dive. It also launches into a top hat. Is it possible we could be getting something like Storm Runner, with a snake theme, that has the same elements as SR? It would sort of "balance" out the park. The Beast used to have Son of Beast at the other side of the park, but now maybe they are going to have a snake-themed steel coaster on one side of the park, with another snake-themed coaster on the other side...which would finally give us the replacement for King Cobra.

Okay...tell me I'm crazy. It's okay.

I would LOVE an Intamin of that style. That's actually what I really really want, as opposed to what I think is actually going in.

RideWarrior - I have not ridden Gatekeeper, and I'm probably not going to make the drive for it this season either. I did do CP last fall though and my favorites for sure were Force, Maverick, and Dragster If that's saying anything about what I prefer. I'm not totally biased though as I went to Busch Gardens Tampa last spring and they have a lot of BM rides. They were all good but only Sheikra was incredible. Kumba was rough. I'm not sure they age well.

And now back to your regularly scheduled topic.

Thats a bummer you cant make it up to CP this year. B&M rides do get rough over time it seems like, Raptor and Mantis have become a little jerky but I think thats because of the wheels. Intamin to me have a better product over the course of time. The last Intamin ride CF invested in was I305 in 2010. I think it is time for them to change it up instead of investing with B&M unless they have a long contract with them. Cedar Point announced a teaser saying that the next development is being manufactured by B&M which could be 3-4 years from now.

I was at the park today and Diamondback definitely has more footers. Unless they add more it is not the transfer area for a BM giga. It could still be the station though.

I wonder if they will you use the SOB station and que line in anyway? I know they use it for halloween but thats 2 months out of the year.

They kept it up for a reason so im sure they will use it in someway.

Lots of interesting info and speculation here, gentlemen. Mr. JTW, that's what I was talking about earlier - not enough footers. But it could be for the station......they don't have nearly enough for anything very big at this point anyway. And Mr. LHR Oxford, you're not crazy - we can let our thoughts wander wherever they please. Personally I would rather not have another snake theme, but that's just my aversion to the real thing.......

Does anyone know of any internet sites that have Son of Beast memorabilia? I was not able to find any on Ebay. Also, if you know of any site that has old pictures or old commercials dating back from when SOB opened I would like the information for it. I am doing a project for my marketing class and I was impressed with the way KI promoted the ride from 1999-2000. I could only find a 3 videos on YouTube dating back to that time.

LOL....you and me both, actually. I can't stand snakes, so I'd prefer it not be a snake theme either, to be honest. But the mind wanders...

It could be a motorsports theme and stay within the realm of action, like the rest of that area.
