Fayette County Fair PTR- 7/23/11

Recommended Posts

I've been in the writing mood for awhile, and since I haven't made it to KI or any other park here lately, I decided to write a trip report for my local county fair.

For those of you that don't know, Fayette County is located about halfway between CInci and Columbus, and the highlight of our summer is usually our fair, which is almost always lackluster at most.

I decided earlier in the day to head out despite the heat, and some of my family decided to join me. We ended up at the fairgrounds around 6, and it was still over 90 degrees outside, which made standing in the sun almost unbearable. The first thing we did was grab some shaved ice, which while not the most tasty thing, did help cool us down. After cooling down, we decided to go watch the truck pulls, which can be heard from anywhere in town, and can be quite annoying. I shot one video of one of the trucks making it's run.

After watching for a bit, we decided to head to the other end of the fairgrounds to check out the rides. Selection wasn't that great, and with my great hesitation of riding fair rides, I ended up only riding one.

After riding, we got hungry, and decided to indulge in some fair food, which is one of my favorites. I ended up having a delicious pork tenderloin sandwich, while everyone else just ate hamburgers and fries.

It was dark about this time, so I started taking some pictures of the rides. These were from a phone camera, so they aren't the greatest.

At this time, it was 10:55, and the fair was closing at 11, I had to go get my favorite fair food of all time!

It wasn't the most exciting day I've had at the local fair, but I did have fun, and got to spend some time with my family.

Mr. Hudson, I'm hesitant of fair rides as well. They just go up too fast and too often......but I like the atmosphere of county fairs. I like your night shots; kind of surreal. Nice bright lights on the rides. But the heat is just too much for me to take right now. Have skipped three fairs already because of it. Maybe can catch some of the later ones when it cools down, if ever. The best thing about all of them to me is the fair food. Good report. Is Washington Court House in Fayette County? I was there once eons ago.

Thanks for sharing. I, on the other hand, love fair rides. I was actually thinking about starting a post sometime soon about starting a bucket list of fair rides. I was inspired by this... White Trash Carnie Rides! There is a ride on there called The Zipper that I'm just jonesing to get on!

I just watched the ride video. Those rides are way more awesome than the rides we get at are carnivals. I want to try them all!

Also, the banjo music in the background really added to the carny atmosphere of that video. Loved it!

Okay, I have ridden a number of these in the past. Sometimes called by other names. Love the old portable bumper cars. They're more fun somehow. Rode lots of times on Rock-O-Plane and Roundup in the past. Was going to ride Zipper at a state fair a few years ago but someone got hurt and they shut it down. But generally speaking, I tend to just look at fair rides now and spend my time eating fair food. Great video, though. Enjoyed this a lot. And you're right, Mr. Roberts, you don't see many of these at the carnivals I've been to in recent years. The "old-fashioned" carnivals were a lot more fun.

I went to the Clermont County Fair today, which came as a pleasant surprise since I did not even know it was going on, and I got to ride this today!

It's called The Hurricane, and like the Scrambler, the centrifugal force really pins you to the outer wall of your seat, except the Hurricane also throws you up and down into the air. Would have been great fun to ride with other people so someone could have been getting squished, but it was still pretty fun just riding by myself. I talked to a carnie and he told me that you don't see a lot of the bigger rides at the smaller fairs and festivals because of the amount of time it takes to set the ride up. The longer the set up time the more it cost and I think the smaller events go with a cheaper package (with smaller rides) that fit into their budgets.

Nice lighting effect. Looks like fun. Didn't know that fair was going on either but it's a long way from me at any rate. Scrambler is still one of my favorites, along with the Tilt-A-Whirl.With weather so hot, night is definitely the best time for this right now.
