PROPULSION The ITALIAN JOB: STUNT TRACK is a multiple LIM (Linear Induction Motor) launch circuit coaster. Trains are propelled in the station with Drive Tires and in the Launch and Boost Zones by Linear Induction Motors.
Drive Tires are propulsion units that are used when train movement and braking or holding is needed in low speed. All Drive Tires are capable of forward and reversing motion.
Linear Induction Motors are propulsion units that are used where either high thrust or high speed propulsion is needed. Propulsion is achieved when currents are produced by the interaction of an electromagnetic field generated by the LIM and an aluminum reaction plate on the cars (fin). The currents produced by this interaction create a magnetic field that opposes the original magnetic field, thereby producing a force vector between the LIM and the fin. This force vector provides thrust to move the train.
The train will enter multiple Boost Zones throughout the ride, where the train will be propelled by a LIM jump.
All wheels (hub, guide, road and upstop) were specifically selected for the rapid acceleration of the train.
MINI COOPER S DESIGN TREATMENT Each ride vehicle, or car is designed to be true to the BMW MINI design. The exterior fiberglass for each is themed as a 75 percent scale MINI Cooper S, approved by BMW.
SPECIAL EFFECTS Subwoofers and tactile transducers are coupled to each seat for an enhanced, audio experience. Transducers are responsible for creating the subway stair sequence.
Audio special effects mimic revving engines, the chirping and squealing of tires, as well as atmospheric noises, such as sirens and explosions.
The audio features are activated by magnets, which the on-board inductive sensors respond to at various points in the ride experience.
Each car also has on-board audio with sound from full-range, dashboard speakers, plus mock instrumentation.
Each car will also feature a power slide effect, simulating over steering, or fishtailing through turns, which will intensify track curves and driving sequences.
THE SEQUENCES The experience begins when the gates open and the MINI cars come to life with the sound of engines revving. The headlights come on and the cars are launched into an ascending parking garage, with 3-360 degree side winding revolutions.
From the parking garage, the cars accelerate towards street level where they encounter three LAPD police cars. The cars swerve to avoid a head on collision. The sound of sirens and squealing tires fill the air. Racing through the streets of LA, the cars dodge traffic, hit high bank curves and are hurled straight up and straight down. A straightaway opens up and the cars make a quick leap into the entrance of the subway. They barrel down the stairs. Riders will feel the sensation of hitting each step as though it was tires on the treads of stairs.
The cars then enter what appears to be a dead end. Inside a warehouse, there is refinery equipment, tanks, pipes and an old fueling station with gas pumps and scatter equipment. Suddenly, a full scale helicopter pops above the warehouse platform and moves towards the cars. The intense sound effects and wind generated from the rotating blades blow across the platform. A gun mounted below the helicopter begins to fire shots that ring out and puncture some the refinery equipment. More shots ricochet and cause small explosions. When some of fire hits the barrels, they explode and water pours out on to the platform and the riders. Then, more fire hits the base of the one of the gas pumps and a fire burns across the platform. A huge explosion then envelops the pumps. More hits and water explosions continue before a shot ruptures a large storage tank. A huge rumble turns into a massive explosion as the tank explodes into a fireball.
The train accelerates out of the warehouse into a dark subway tunnel. Sweeping side to side, the train dives downwards and upwards through a series of surf curves. With a sudden burst of acceleration, the cars crash through a billboard sign and swoop below a bridge into an aqueduct splash down water feature that creates a large blast of spray.
RIDE SOPHISTICATION The sophistication of this experience lies in the seamless integration of movie staging and special effects with coaster thrills.
POWER ANALOGY The ITALIAN JOB: STUNT TRACK has equivalent power to 1,500 horsepower.
BRAKES The ITALIAN JOB: STUNT TRACK has two types of brake systems: Pneumatic Mechanical Squeeze Brakes and Magnetic Brakes. The mechanical brakes function similar to a disc brake on an automobile, except that they are linear. Magnetic brakes are high strength, rare earth magnets. The application of a fundamental magnetic theory is very similar to the LIM electromagnetic theory, but it works in reverse. The faster the movement, the higher the resistive force.
RESTRAINT SYSTEMS Each bucket-style seat on the ITALIAN JOB: STUNT TRACK uses highly redundant, individual, inverse "U" shaped, mechanical lap-bars, with integrated shin pads and a padded handhold. Ergonomics have been strictly calculated to ensure maximum comfort and safety.
DESIGN & CONTRUCTION A team of over 100 highly trained and talented individuals, from diverse fields, partnered on the design and construction of ITALIAN JOB: STUNT TRACK. Planning took over a year and construction began in the fall of 2004. Some of the talented and trained professionals included engineers, steel workers, steel erection specialists, electricians, mechanical &specialists, control systems specialists, excavation and grading experts, scenic painters, audio engineers, pneumatic specialists, flame / fire specialist, representatives from the ride manufacturer and representatives from Wonderland's veteran Maintenance and Construction team.
